1992 – present

Free-lance writer, editor and essayist published by more than 25 regional and national trade and consumer magazines. Monthly columnist for Colorado Central magazine since 1996.

Jan. 2005 – present

Ranch manager, Bear Bones Ranch. In charge of all management aspects for a small ranch with up to 10 horses and a small natural grassfed beef herd. Planning and purchasing of all hay and feed, and managing all aspects of grazing on 850 acres of private and leased public land.

May 2004 – January 2009

Copy editor for the Pueblo Chieftain, daily newspaper in Pueblo, Colorado.

1998 – 2004

Writer and editor for MAF BioNutritionals. Duties included all phases of writing, editing and production of the Maffetone Report, a nationally distributed bi-monthly nutrition and health newsletter. Additional responsibilities included development of health-news Web content , as well as editing books, booklets and professional articles written by Phil Maffetone.

1995 – 2003

Technical writer and editor for Transportation Technology Center, Inc., the world’s largest research and test facility for railroad technologies and equipment. Duties included writing an extensive annual-report yearbook and editing technical reports.

Aug. 1991 – June 1992

Associate editor, Rocky Mountain Sports and InLine magazines, based in Boulder, Colorado. Duties included assigning, editing and writing stories as well as writing a monthly “High Altitude” column.

Sept. 1990 – May 1991

Adjunct instructor of Mass Communications, University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo. Teaching duties included classes in news writing, feature writing, editorial writing and reporting public affairs. Also served as advisor for student newspaper, USC Today.

Dec. 1989 – Oct. 1990

Editor and general manager of The Leadville Herald-Democrat, a weekly newspaper in Leadville, Colorado. Managed a staff of four and supervised editorial, advertising, production and business operations.

May 1982 – Jan. 1988

Various editorial positions at The Pueblo Chieftain, fourth largest daily newspaper in Colorado. Positions included slot copy editor, news editor, wire editor and graphics editor. In addition, held a management position as regional editor, supervising a staff of six reporters to cover a geographical region roughly one-fourth of the state.

Prior to May 1982

I started working at community newspapers when I was 17, and worked at several newspapers during my college years. These included the Northwest Colorado Daily Press and its three satellite weeklies, the Hayden Valley Press, Snake River Press and Jackson County Star, as well as the Colorado Daily, Louisville Times, Colorado Statesman, Boulder Daily Camera and the CU Silver and Gold Record for which I was actually the delivery boy.
